Swedish Midsummer

One of the most important holiday celebrations takes place in Sweden this weekend - Midsummer. Starting on Friday, family and friends will leave the cities behind and head to the country side to party. Gathering around the traditional beautiful may pole wearing hand-picked floral crowns, the singing and dancing (like a frog?!) will continue into the early hours.

Pickled herrings (sill), smoked salmon with dill (gravlax), new potatoes with dill, sour cream and chives will be accompanied with ample amounts of cold beer and of course Aquavit (unsweetened snaps - flavoured with caraway or dill). Followed by the delicious strawberry cake - a real taste of summer.

Midsummer is also a time for love with many weddings taking place. Legend has it that girls and young women are supposed to pick seven different species of flowers and lay them under their pillows. At night, their future husbands appear to them in a dream......

Happy Midsummer everyone x
